Summary: Examines how the Third Reich was built up as a fascist system in accord with "barbarianism", which lauded extreme violence as a means for world domination. The Reich was the result of a conscious program of cruelty; the idea of the physical destruction of the enemy was omnipresent in Nazi theory and put into practice, from the start, whenever possible. Discusses the following topics: the blindness of Jewish cultural leaders to the stated Nazi program of extermination; antisemitic cinema, especially Veit Harlan's "Jud Süss", which aroused no opposition from its staff or the critics; the creation of the illusion of a model camp in Theresienstadt; the Church's passivity with regard to antisemitism in Germany; what can and cannot be said about Auschwitz in the light of Adorno's views; and antisemitism in Renaud Camus' journal from 1994, entitled "La Campagne de France" (2000). The appendix, pp. 229-254, contains six short texts on subjects loosely related to the Holocaust. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
