Strategic survey for Israel 2010 continues the annual Strategic Survey for Israel series and the Middle East Strategic Balance series, published by the Institute for National Security Studies over the last twenty-five years. The articles compiled here paint a comprehensive picture of Israel's strategic environment and the complex dilemmas that Israel faces at this time. Analyzing the major developments in the Middle East over the past year, the articles explore how Israel might best navigate current and prospective situations to meet the national security challenges confronting it. The chapters dealing with Israel's domestic arena examine the operational and legal lessons from the past year's campaigns in Lebanon and gaza; the freeze construction in the setlements; prisioner exchanges; the Arabs in Israel; and the degree of prepardness of the civilian front. Regarding Israel and the Midddle East, the chapters explore the Israeli-Palestinian porlitical track; the Arab world and the political process; nd Israel-Turkey relations. Looking at regional trends, the volume analyzes the challenges United States faces in the greater Middle East; US-Israel relations; the Iranian challenge; Europe and the Middle East; Egypt's political posture; the Lebanese arena; and militant Islam in the region and beyond. The analytical portion of the volume concludes with a review of the political and security challenges facing the State of Israel, and details the considerations that should guide the Israeli government in formulating responses to long term threats. The volume closes with an appendix that surveys the main trends in military buildup in the Middle East, and presents tables and graphs charting the military posture of the states in the region.
